Good, Clean and Fair

Cycles of Change believes everyone should have a right to good, clean and fair food. Carlo Petrini, founder of the International Slow Food Movement, addresses the need for good, clean and fair food in Manifestos on the Future of Food and Seed. He advocates that consumers, or “co-producers,” of food must reclaim the collective right to food that meets these three criteria.

GOOD

Food should be good—enjoyable and diverse within every culture, meeting the culture’s standards for taste.

CLEAN

Food should be clean, so as not to harm the health of those eating it, in addition to not disrupting the balance within ecosystems, polluting the air and limiting biodiversity.

FAIR

Finally, food should be traded fairly. In order to ensure the continuation of good, clean food, the farmers and producers must be paid equitably. The art of food production must be appealing enough for generation after generation of farmers to want to continue their practice and preserve their knowledge of the land. Farmers must find dignity and fulfillment in their work to prevent them from moving to the cities to seek work.
